Childhood socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with lower mortality in older Japanese men: the JAGES cohort study

  • Childhood socioeconomic disadvantage was ‘paradoxically’ associated with lower mortality in Japanese men, but not in women.
  • The association between childhood socioeconomic disadvantage and lower mortality was stronger among the 75-years-old or older participants compared with those aged 65–74 years, which may be due to selective survival, childhood physical training or postwar calorie restriction in this generation of Japanese males.
